Spain Collection

Welcome to the Spain Collection at the Marx library. The Library has been associated with the struggle in Spain nearly since it first opened its doors in 1933. Many meetings to support the struggle for freedom including meetings of Aid Spain and solidarity conferences were held here. International Brigaders served as committee members. As recently as 2010, a joint meeting was held between the Library and the Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory with representatives from Spain, MML and attended by Sam Lesser played to a packed audience.

Marx Library is the International Brigade archive in Britain and we are proud to be able to open our Spain Collection on the web, providing hitherto restricted resources. The Collection includes battalion rolls, medical records from the front, personal letters, diaries, news clippings, pamphlets, songbooks, and posters.

As the leading source of material on Marxism and the Civil War, we give pride of place to the battalion banner. The Library holds nearly every surviving official document of the British Brigades, from battle orders to the dependency committees. It holds personal records, diaries and momentos as well as medals and a comprehensive and unique collection of photos. The Library also keeps anarchist material.
